I've always heard good things about the T-series, so a T60p it is:15" 1600x1200ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 256MB seems a bit weak?)Core Duo T2500 same as the Dell2x512MB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAMAnd the service crap - again the standard choices: 3 year Limited warranty 3, Customer Carry-in, parts and labour (system battery: one year)And finally an HP/Compaq nx9420 (btw - is there a reason to shun the nw series? It is listed as the third business class model besides nc and nx):17" 1440 x 900ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 256MBCore Duo T2500.The service plans are separate, anyone know anything about HP/Compaqs service? So, from my quick look the Core Duo T2500 is a sweetspot atm.2x1GB of Ram looks like the best price/performance ratio (those 2GB sticks are damn expensive, even though they sound nice with only 2 RAM slots). The monitor is a blank for me - is bigger better? What about the resolution - some of them sound a little extreme for the monitors size. Most of the configurations are pulled from my ass, but it's always easier to comment on something specific.First up is a Dell Latitude D820:Core Duo T2500 (2.0Ghz 2MB L2 cache 667Mhz FSB) Base Discrete Graphics 512MB - I can't find any details on the GPU besides that - only a choice between 512 and 256MB15.4" 1680 x 10502GB 533MHz DDR2 Memory (2 x 1GB)100GB SATA HDD 7200RPMAnd the service crap (these were the standard choices):3 Year Business Support3 Year Completecare Accidental Damage Cover3 Year International Onsite Service with Next Business Day ReponseNext up a Lenovo. The relatively slight differential in price point(s) will dissolve in hind-sight after years of satisfying use obtained from a nice business class product. The three year all-inclusive warranty needs no explanation.I now surrender the floor to other, far more knowledgeable posters. Consumer grade laptops are built to be sold and replaced right after the one-year warranty expires and the computer chassis disintegrates - some may look pretty and have slick bells and whistles, rest assured, they're shit. You want to limit her purchase to a "Business Class" laptop and secure a three year all-inclusive, accidental damage warranty that covers even accidental damage (spills, drops, bullet holes, etc.).The reason for going business class is simply because those are the laptops that are built with quality and durability. Others will chime in with far more specific recommendations here, but to start the ball rolling. This is an ideal scenario, price not being a driving consideration, and YES, Dell (LATITUDE) and IBM/Lenovo are two contenders - HP/Compaq business class laptops (model numbers NCxxxx & NXxxxx if I'm not mistaken) would be THE third.
